Here is the short and sweet answer...
Reiki is a relaxation technique that can help reduce stress, fatigue, physical pain, and many other ailments and dis-eases of the body. It is given by a Reiki practitioner that channels Universal Energy through the palms of their hands into your body.
Reiki can be given in-person or distantly and is just as effective both ways. Reiki is complimentary to any Western medical treatment you may be receiving. It works harmoniously with Western Medicine but should never take the place of a licensed medical professional.
Here is the long and detailed answer...
Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a healing modality that was re-discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900's. I say re-discovered because I believe that energy work similar to Reiki has been used by humans for thousands of years. Rei means universal or life and Ki means force or energy, so put together it
means Universal Life-Force Energy.
A Reiki practitioner will either lay their hands on you, hover them above your body, or can even channel it from a remote distance to you. As the reiki practitioner channels the Reiki energy through themselves to you, you may or may not feel sensations. Including but not limited to, tingles, heat, cold or even like a pair of "extra" hands are on you. As this is taking place, Reiki works as a
healing agent that heals your Spiritual body. It works closely with the chakra system to heal on a Spiritual level which then in turns heals physical or emotional ailments as well.
Reiki should never take the place of a licensed medical professional, but it works wonderfully in conjunction with Western medicine. Reiki practitioners are not doctors or nurses, well some of them are, but the majority of practicing reiki people are every day human beings that are just getting connected with healing energy.
It is my belief that we aren't just made up of one physical body, we are much more elaborate then that. We have the physical body that everyone can feel. Then we have the emotional body which everyone can sense. And last (but not least) we have the spiritual body that is much harder to put your finger on or substantiate.
Our spiritual bodies are made up of many, many energy fields called chakras. There are 7 main chakras in your body that I will explain in further detail on another page. Each chakra represents an area of our lives and when one of them is out of balance then some symptoms of dis-ease occur. Reiki works directly with those chakras to balance them out and heal our spiritual bodies.
It is thought by many Reiki practitioners that all ailments & dis-ease stem from an imbalance in their chakra system and through frequent Reiki sessions you can attain balance and keep it that way with continued Reiki practice.
(More on dis-ease to come, as I feel that is a very important word. As I really
understood what it meant, it changed me whole perspective on healing.)
Reiki does not conform to any doctrine or set of guidelines so it is not a religion. In fact I have taught Reiki to people of many faiths. It is spiritual in practice but does not conform to any religion at all. Some people have discovered certain religious healing modalities but Reiki in its own is not religious.
There are many forms of Reiki. All of which I feel are useful, but the first known energy system actually defined and a name put to it was Usui Reiki. The way I look at Reiki is, if it were a tree Usui Reiki would be the trunk of the tree and all the other modalities would be the branches. Some of the modalities are stemmed off a branch that came from Usui Reiki but they all came from Usui Reiki and mother earth in the beginning. Each form of Reiki that I have worked
with has a different energy "feel" to it and each one is helpful in healing and helping others heal. If you are confused as to which reiki to explore more, email me and I will help you out!
Once someone has been attuned to Reiki, it is common thought amongst Reiki practitioners that we receive a Reiki guide. Our guides and Angels are spiritual bodies that are on an ethreic level that assist us with different things and on our paths. Sometimes during a Reiki session or attunement, the clients guides will appear and also assist with the session.
So now I hope that you have a little bit of an idea about what Reiki is. Like I said as I grow this page will also. I will update it again soon and include some definitions of the words I have used here as well.
