The Greek philosopher Pythagorus is credited with introducing numerology - but you don't need to be a mathematician to have fun applying numbers to life.

Numerology is fun, easy and very revealing - a few simple sums will give you your special numbers.  Whether you want to know who you might be compatible with, the career best suited to you, how you'll get on with your children or even the kind of vacation you'd most enjoy, the numbers attached to your name can tell you lots of things you did know, and plenty more that you didn't.

You can also find out what the numbers reveal about the people around you - your friends and work collegues, the people you admire and those you don't.

To get started with numberology simply calculate your personal Destiny Number - the number derived from the letters of your name and learn a little more about yourself and your friends.

Calculating your Number:

Every letter has a number, from one ot nine, attributed to it.  They run consecutively through the alphabet, from 1 to 9 and back to 1 again, so A = 1, B = 2, I = 9, J = 1.

1 = A, J, S

2 = B, K, T

3 = C, L, U

4 = D, M, V

5 = E, N, W

6 = F, O, X

7 = G, P, Y

8 = H, Q, Z

9 = I, R

To calculate your numerology number, work out the number for each letter in your name, then add these numbers together.  Keep adding until you get a single digit.

For example:

E  M  M A     J  A  N  E     S  M   I  T  H

5+4+4+1  +1+1+5+5   +1+4+9+2+8 = 50 = 5+0 =5

If your name were Emma Jane Smith, your number would be 5.

Changing Your Destiny Number

Your Destiny Number should be worked out from the letters in your name you are usually known by and is most accurate - and revealing - when based on the name that appears on your birth certificate.  Happiness, fame or wealth might already be indicated by the number you have., but don't be tempted to take a shortcut by changing your name to arrive at a more favorable number.  It won't work.

New Names

You can, however, try tweaking your given name, perhaps by shortening or lengthening your first name or using a middle name, or a nickname, if you have one.

A name change that comes about through marriage can also give you a different number.  Taking your husband's name when you marry may well bring you some of the qualities you most love in him.
